Overview

You must be sponsored by your child or their spouse, and in some cases a community organisation. You can apply directly for the subclass 143 or, as many do, spread the cost of the visa over a longer period of time by applying for the subclass 173 first.

About this Visa

Permanent Contributory Parent Visa (subclass 143)

The subclass 143 contributory parent visa is a permanent visa for parents of a child who have resided in Australia for a minimum of 2 years.

You must be sponsored by your child or their spouse, and in some cases a community organisation.

You will need to meet the balance of family test to be eligible for this visa. This test looks at the number of children you have, and where those children are residing. Generally, the number of children you have residing in Australia must be equal to, or more than, the number of children you have residing outside Australia.

Additionally, an Assurance of Support is required at the time of decision. This is a bond that is refundable ten years after you enter. This amount may not be refunded if you have incurred any debts to the Australian Government, including receiving any welfare benefits.

The cost of the visa is significant at approximately $46,000. A majority of this is payable at the time your visa is ready to be granted, after you have met all other eligibility for the visa including health and character tests.

Temporary Contributory Parent Visa (subclass 173)

This temporary visa is an option for applicants who wish to stagger the significant cost of the subclass 143 over a longer period of time. The total combined cost is more, with approximately $29,130 payable before the grant of the 173 Visa.

Once the 173 is granted, the applicant has 2 years to apply for the subclass 143. This fee is $19,420.

When the contributory fee is spread out in this way, the total payable is more, as $29,130 is payable just before grant of the 173 visa, with a second fee of $19,420 payable prior to the 143 being granted.

After your sponsor is approved

Once your sponsor is approved, you must lodge your visa application within 6 months of the sponsorship approval, or 60 days if you are given Permission to Apply in Australia.

Once the visa is granted, the visa period starts from the day it is granted, not the day of entry to Australia. It is important to ensure you are ready to travel to Australia.
