About this Visa

The Dependent Child 445 visa is a temporary visa that, once granted, allows a dependant child of a 309, 820 or 445 visa holder to travel to Australia where they can remain until a decision is made on the parents permanent visa.

The child must be sponsored by the same sponsor of the visa holding parent. They must also be under 18 years old. Children over 18 may still be eligible, but they must show financial dependency on the parent holding the eligible visa.

Showing financial dependency can be complex, but it is a critical eligibility requirement for the visa. They must show they are completely or substantially reliant on the parent for financial assistance with basic needs, including:

  • Food
  • Clothing
  • Shelter

This financial dependency must have been in place for a lengthy period of time.

Dependant children who are receiving financial assistance from someone else may not be eligible if that financial assistance is equal to or greater than the financial assistance being provided by the visa holding parent.

Children who are living at home and are studying full time will generally be classed as dependant, however dependency is assessed on a case by case basis.

Bridging Visa

If you apply for this visa onshore, you may be entitled to a bridging visa. This enables you to remain onshore while you are waiting for a decision on your visa.

Consent to Travel

If the child is under 18 years old, they must meet the following in order to be granted the visa:

  • Written consent of everyone who can legally decide where they live is given, OR
  • The law of the child’s home country allow them to leave their home country OR
  • It is consistent with any Australian child order specifically relating to the child
