Employer Nomination Scheme

Subclass 186

The Employer Nomination Scheme (subclass 186) is a permanent visa enabling skilled workers, who are nominated by their employer, to live and work in Australia permanently.

Overview

The visa is granted based on the holder being skilled in a specific occupation however the visa doesn’t require you to seek or maintain employment in this occupation once it is granted.

There are two more common streams for this visa:

  • Direct Entry stream: For applications under 45 who ave an occupation on the MLTSSL and have obtained a positive skills assessment in their occupation

  • Temporary Residence Transition stream: For applicants who had applied for or held a 457 visa before 18 April 2017, or those who applied for a 457 or 482 visa after 18 April 2017.

About this Visa

Direct Entry stream

If your occupation is on the MLTSSL list you may be nominated for the Direct Entry stream. You must be under 45 years of age, have Competent English and meet the skill assessment. Occupations generally require 3 years experience, however some occupations may be exempt. Your nominating employer must offer you a two year full time position on grant of the visa. They must also pay you at a market salary rate and prove the genuineness of the position.

Temporary Residence Transition stream

The Temporary Residence Transition stream is available to applicants who have worked for the same Australian sponsor in the same occupation for 3 years on a subclass 482 visa. As the subclass 482 only started in March 2018, holders of this visa are eligible for the TRTS as of March 2021.
