Overview

This visa allows the parent to visit Australia for up to 3 or 5 years. Subsequent 870 visas allow parents to visit Australia up to a maximum period of 10 years in total.

About this Visa

This visa requires Parents to have an approved ‘parent sponsor’ before applying. The sponsor is not required to pay a sponsorship bond however the parent must maintain adequate health insurance for the duration of their stay in Australia. Sponsors agree to support parents financially and provide accommodation during their stay. If the parent incurs any public health debts, the sponsor agrees to pay for these.

Parent sponsors must evidence having a household taxable income of at least $83,454.80. This may be shared among other siblings. The parent sponsor must also show they have been usually resident in Australia for at least 4 years.

Other general requirements include, but are not limited to, meeting any previous sponsorship obligations, meeting character checks and have no debts (or have arranged to repay them).

Parent Sponsors also have a number of obligations that will be imposed on them. It's important to understand these obligations. If sponsors breach their obligations, they may be barred from sponsoring in the future. These obligations include providing financial support and accommodation to the parent. Sponsors are also required to keep certain records and provide these to the department if requested.

After your sponsor is approved

Once your sponsor is approved, you must lodge your visa application within 6 months of the sponsorship approval, or 60 days if you are given Permission to Apply in Australia.

Once the visa is granted, the visa period starts from the day it is granted, not the day of entry to Australia. It is important to ensure you are ready to travel to Australia.
